After a seven-hour standoff, a police robot entered a New City home to discover a man dead in an apparent suicide Thursday.
According to police, 53-year-old Gerard Gertz died from a gunshot wound to the head after a long standoff with police. Gertz's psychiatrist called police to have his client committed after Gertz sealed himself inside his Buena Vista Road home. Police say eight shots were fired in their direction as they approached the property around 11 a.m. Police immediately issued a reverse 911 to warn neighbors to stay inside and closed area roads.
At one point, police released tear gas into the three buildings on the property to try to flush the man out. As the incident came to a close, police continued to search the premises for additional weaponry.
