Active and retired police officers and firefighters honored their fallen brothers and sisters with a new memorial in Yonkers.
David Barca, president of the Police and Fire Memorial Foundation of Yonkers, says the nonprofit group raised money to refurbish the dilapidated memorial built back in 2004.
With some funds from the city, Barca says plans include new LED lights, resetting some leaning flagpoles and replacing concrete pavers with granite.
"There's going to be granite slabs up here that alternate colors to signify police and fire and in the circle they are joining as one to show we're together at this sacred memorial," says Barca.
Barca says new names will also be etched into the fire department's tribute stone, including FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy who died in September 2016 after responding to a house explosion in the Bronx.
"For the police and fire side, these are our friends and family that are on this wall, it's not just a name on a stone," Barca says.
Construction is expected to last roughly three months. Organizers are hoping it will be complete by September.
