An Ossining man is facing felony charges after allegedly attacking a family dog with a knife.

Police say they received a call around 9:30 p.m. Thursday that a dog had been stabbed at a house on James Street.

When they arrived they found a pit bull named Tyson tied to a fence and bleeding from what appeared to be multiple stab wounds.

Police say the suspect, Lewis Darryl Bentley, claims the dog had bitten him so he allegedly went inside for a kitchen knife and stabbed the dog repeatedly.

Bentley is not the dog's owner but he does live at the house. He told police he had problems with the animals before.

Neighbors told News 12 that the dog is not known to be violent.

Bentley was arrested and charged with aggravated animal abuse.

The dog was taken to Animal Control to be treated for his wounds and is expected to survive. Police also had the SPCA check for any signs of prior abuse.

Bentley was also taken to a local hospital to be treated for bite wounds, but police say it's unclear when those wounds occurred.
