Police say an 18-year-old was killed in a shooting in Mount Vernon Thursday.

Tomani Turner was at 240 East Fourth St. when he was shot twice in the torso, according to authorities.

Police say they arrived at the scene around 12:30 p.m. and transported him to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital for treatment.

Turner was listed in critical condition for several hours before dying in the hospital, according to officials.

Mount Vernon detectives from the Violent Crime Unit are investigating the crime with the help of the FBI and Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.

The shooting occurred about five minutes away from the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Zyaire Fernandez, the third teen lost to youth violence in the area over the last year.

Some people have grown critical of Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard’s approach to public safety.

“Crime is going up when she says it's not going up, and residents are tired," said Jesse Van Lew, cofounder of anti-violence group Save Mt. Vernon.

Save Mt. Vernon held a rally on Tuesday calling on Howard to release a public safety plan. The mayor attended the event and announced a plan that day in her State of the City address.

“These are things that we have been addressing. We're not running away from issues. I have been talking about needing more funding for the police department,” she said.

The new plan includes programs to create neighborhood watches and youth mentorship, along with finding ways for the police union to improve officer retention.
