Orange County police say some EMS workers and officers were hospitalized this weekend after a possible exposure to fentanyl.
Washingtonville police say they responded to a call on Burnett Way with Blooming Grove EMS for a man in cardiac arrest.
While they were trying to save the man's life, they saw a suspicious white powder nearby.
The EMS workers and officers left the house out of caution in case the powder was fentanyl or another dangerous substance.
The 36-year-old Washingtonville man who was suffering from cardiac arrest was taken to a Newburgh hospital, where he died.
Five EMS workers and two police officers were checked out. Some were taken to the hospital for mild symptoms.
All the first responders have since been discharged.
Police say they're working with state troopers to identify the white powder.
