A small fire in a gated community prompted evacuations and led to a discovery that landed one person in handcuffs.
Police, fire and hazmat crews were at the Half Moon Bay Townhouses in Croton-on-Hudson for much of Saturday and Sunday conducting an investigation.
At least three buildings in the complex were evacuated at around 10 a.m. after police responded to a small fire in the basement of unit number 1803. The fire led to the discovery of chemicals in the apartment.
Police say a man is in custody and is charged with two felony counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Eric Scuccimarra, who lives in unit 1803.
Authorities are not yet sure of the exact nature of the chemicals found, but they say they did find a stash of pills.
While residents returned to two of the buildings, the building that had chemicals inside is still evacuated as the DEC continues to remove the materials.
