The driver of a truck that flipped over and spilled its cargo of scrap metal on the Tappan Zee Bridge Friday was operating with a suspended license.
Dramatic dashcam video from Qing Chang, the driver behind the truck, captured the exact moment the dump truck tipped over onto the left northbound lane on the Tappan Zee Bridge during the morning commute.
The broken rear axle, which caused the truck to tip, rolls into view a few seconds later.
Chang says he heard a loud boom come from the truck right next to him. That is when he says he made the decision to apply the brake, a decision that saved his life.
Drivers on the southbound side were also lucky. As the truck tipped, it forced the concrete barricade into the other lanes. The crushed truck parts it was carrying flew through the air and struck three vehicles.
The crash forced the closure of the northbound side, while those on the southbound side sat in traffic for hours.
The driver of the truck, 61-year-old Dennis McDermott, was working for Kelman Transport, a scrap metal and paper recycling center just north of Albany.
He was issued a ticket for driving with a suspended license.
