Police say Diana Bekatoros allegedly stabbed her 84-year-old mother to death.
One neighbor said, “It’s terrible that in a small town like this you have such a terrible tragedy happening around Thanksgiving."
Prosecutors stated in court that Bekatoros, 51, was visiting her mom and dad’s home on Carman Court on Wednesday.
The father went to watch TV after dinner at around 6:30 p.m. in his room. When he came out around 9 p.m., police say he found his wife Josephine stabbed to death on the floor and called 911.
In the courtroom, the judge stated that Bekatoros, “was smiling inappropriately at this serious charge.”
The judge ordered a psychological evaluation. Bekatoros denied the charges she is facing.
At the time of the crime, she allegedly left her parents’ house and was later arrested at her Long Island City home.
Bekatoros was held without bail and is due back in court on Tuesday.
