Police at 12 state colleges in New York will be trained to use the anti-heroin drug Narcan.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman made the announcement at SUNY Purchase, where the campus police will receive 25 Narcan kits.
Officers are receiving special training so they can learn how to administer the drug. Narcan is sprayed into the nose and can reverse the potentially fatal effects of a heroin or opioid overdose.
New York has seen a surge in heroin use. In 2012, the Hudson Valley had the highest per capita heroin hospitalization rate in the entire state.
