A Pleasantville woman has helped rescue 18 golden retrievers from abuse and neglect in Turkey.
Eileen McFadden is part of Golden Re-Triever Rescue Inc. in Westchester, and when she learned of the dogs' plight she began the arduous task of rescuing and flying 18 of them to New York.
McFadden has been working on the move since June.
Experts estimate that there are 50,000 dogs living on the streets of Turkey. About 500 to 800 are believed to be purebred golden retrievers.
Owning a purebred golden in Turkey was once considered to be a status symbol. But once they became unpopular, they were sent out on the street.
The rescues arrived at JFK International Airport on Friday and were taken to Ossining, where they will await their new homes.
McFadden says another group of rescued golden retrievers will arrive in November.
