The Hudson Valley is less than a week away from phase four reopening, but not everyone will be allowed to go back to work.
Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo removed gyms from phase four reopening, and said they will remain closed indefinitely.
The decision is disappointing to small business owners like Anthony Moreno, who runs Boutique Personal Training in White Plains.
Unlike big box gyms, which could see hundreds of people a day, Moreno’s small fitness center is catered to individual sessions and personalized groups.
This gym hasn't taken any clients in the studio since the shutdown began. But they have put in safety measures for when people return. Things like gloves, masks, electrostatic disinfecting, and adding a fulltime employee just to clean.
“We have electrostatic sanitizing, which is a non-invasive method, that keeps the whole place clean...in addition we have cordoned off sections so our clients are nicely spaced out and we don’t have that many clients at one time,” says Moreno.
Owners like Moreno oppose the blanket statement that all gyms must stay closed, and feels, instead, fitness businesses should be looked at on an individual basis.
In order to stay in shape and make some money, Moreno has temporarily shifted his workouts online or in outdoor spaces for clients.
