ParaTransit riders in Westchester may soon have to dig deeper into their wallets.
More than 6,000 people throughout Westchester County use the service designed for seniors and those with disabilities.
The one-way fare is $4, but it will go up by $1 June 20.
A public hearing held Tuesday night in White Plains had commuters voicing concerns about the impending fare hike.
A county spokesperson says there hasn't been a rate increase since 2009, but Paratransit operating costs are up by 33 percent at over $11 million a year.
"The new fare is 50 cents below the allowable level," spokesperson Ned McCormack said in a statement. "Our ParaTransit coverage goes well beyond what the law requires, especially in the northern part of the county. No fare increase is ever popular, but we have to pay for the services we deliver."
