Farmers at Meadow View Farm in Orange County will begin discarding tons of milk today due to the coronavirus crisis.

The farm is one of a dozen farms in the county that say there’s no longer the same demand for milk.

“The market is down because schools are closed. People aren’t shopping or going to restaurants,” says 87-year-old farmer Karl Balbach.

The lifelong Orange County farmer owns Meadow View Farm and still milks the cows himself.

Companies like Midland Farms are no longer in need of his service amidst the outbreak. Balbach says state law prohibits farmers from pasteurizing and selling milk to the public without a costly permit, so he has no choice but to let it go to waste. 

News 12 reached out to Midland Farms for comment but has not received a response.
