As some parents worry about their children being in front of a screen all day for school starting this fall, an ophthalmologist says there are ways to alleviate children's eyes from straining.
Dr. Shirah Schwartz-Jacobs tells News 12 there's still a lack of data on the impact of screen use on the eyes, but doctors are seeing more children suffering from digital eye strain.
She says that to alleviate this, keep children about arms-length distance from the device, adjust the brightness and contrast of the screens and implement the 20/20/20 rule.
The 20/20/20 rule is that for every 20 minutes of learning, you take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
Schwartz-Jacobs also says to avoid glares and dark rooms, and limit screen time outside of the virtual classroom.
