Authorities in New Rochelle say police fatally shot a suspect after he pulled out a gun during an encounter Friday night.

Officials say it happened just before 11 p.m. when two officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Potter Avenue and Pierce Streets after it was flagged Wednesday night for moving in an unusual fashion.

Police say when they stopped the vehicle, a passenger, 24-year-old Kamal Flowers, left the car and fled the scene on foot.

A brief pursuit ensued and one of the officers fired a Taser after Flowers pulled out a weapon, police say. Officials say after the Taser was ineffective, an officer fired six shots at Flowers - one which hit him in the the heart.

News 12 has obtained audio from Friday night.

The officer received medical help and Flowers was pronounced dead while being taken to the hospital.

Family and friends of Flowers are calling the incident "a murder by an officer." Mijon Hunter, Flowers' girlfriend, tells News 12 that she is demanding change of the way black people are treated by police.

More than 100 friends and family members peacefully celebrated his life near Brook Street Saturday night.

A background check on Flowers shows he's faced several robbery charges in the past. His close friends tell News 12 he was just released from jail. New Rochelle Mayor Noam Branson called the shooting, which is under investigation, a tragedy.

Officials say the New Rochelle police officer who fired the fatal shot had five years on the force. The other police officer has been with the department for three years. City officials promised to release an audiotape recording of the incident soon. 

The Westchester County District Attorney's Office is investigating. County Executive George Latimer says the state Attorney General is also looking into what happened and why, adding "Justice will be served, but only by following a proper, deliberate process, with inclusion and equitable input from all."
