Orange County officials say 31 people have been accused of scamming the county's welfare system out of more than $400,000 in public assistance benefits.
The latest wave of arrests were part of a larger operation by the Orange County District Attorney's Office to combat welfare fraud in the county. Since June, more than 67 people have been charged with defrauding over $700,000 from the system.
Some of those benefits allegedly came in the form of $118,000 worth of food stamps. Others are accused of defrauding the Medicaid system of $87,000. Among those charged, 38-year-old Rochelle Green, of Middletown, is accused of stealing over $27,000 in public benefits and food stamps.
Another defendant, 49-year-old Tina Clayborne, of Modena, is accused of collecting $21,000 in benefits after she moved out of Orange County.
Since June, the county's Department of Social Services says it has received over $90,000 from recipients who voluntarily paid back benefits they weren't entitled to.
