The Department of Sanitation is rolling out new rules aimed at keeping trash — and rats — off city streets.
Since Nov. 12, residents of buildings with 1 to 9 units must use bins with lids for their trash.
Each bin costs about $50 and includes anti-theft features, like serial numbers and space for an address.
Non-DSNY bins won’t be allowed after June 2026.
Warnings will be issued until Jan. 3, giving New Yorkers time to adjust to the changes.
The next phase, targeting larger buildings, begins in the spring.
