The city of Newburgh’s first ever Citizen Police Academy has just celebrated its first graduation.
In a post on Facebook, officials say fifteen Newburgh residents met with police officers over the course of nine weeks, talking about things like patrol procedures, gun violence strategy, and criminal investigations.
The curriculum was as follows:
Week One: Introduction & Law Enforcement, History of Policing, Criminal Justice, and History of CNPD
Week Two: Use of Force and Citizens Response to Active Shooter Events
Week Three: Patrol Procedures & Recruitment and Academy Training
Week Four: Firearms & Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (Check out the video from our EVOC class!)
Week Five: Gun Violence Strategy
Week Six: Traffic Safety and K9 Unit Functions
Week Seven: Procedural Justice and Implicit Bias
Week Eight: Criminal Investigations
Week Nine: Crime Scene Unit and Reality Based Scenarios
The Citizen Police Academy was designed to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions between the community and police - and build on trust. City officials say they learned as much from the students as the students learned from their instructors
