A New Windsor town police officer, Maria Schettini, is in stable condition after being hit by a car on Sunday night.

The incident occurred on Little Britain Road near Executive Drive.

Officer Schettini was directing traffic when she was struck by a passing vehicle.

The driver, a 74-year-old New Windsor woman, fled the scene but was apprehended by officers approximately a mile away.

The New Windsor police continue their investigation into the accident.
