New U.S. citizens were sworn in at a special ceremony Friday in Rockland County.
Approximately 160 people were sworn in at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona. The crowd consisted of immigrants from 43 nations, with some from the six countries on President Donald Trump's travel ban.
"I'm the first of my family to become a U.S. citizen," said Zozan Anter, from Syria.
Anter was a permanent resident for 10 years living in Valley Cottage and has now finalized her citizenship. However, she said her family members still can't come to the U.S. because of the travel ban.
"I have two sisters that are refugees," she said. "I can't talk to them often because it's heartbreaking. I'm sitting here having my life, everything available to me."
Anter said it's a privilege and honor to finally become a U.S. citizen.
