Police departments across Westchester are celebrating “National Night Out” – an annual campaign led by police to increase safety by improving community relationships.
News 12’s Jonathan Gordon was in New Rochelle where the police-involved shooting of Jarrell Garris is currently under investigation by the state Attorney General's office.
New Rochelle's police commissioner told News 12 that the department will not respond to any questions including ones about the event.
A city spokesperson sent out a statement that says, "Our officers have worked hard to organize an educational and fun event, including safety demonstrations and community information tables."
A New Rochelle police officer fatally shot Garris, 37, last month. Police were attempting to arrest him after he was accused of stealing produce from a nearby grocery store when they said he reached for an officer's weapon.
Body camera footage released by the department and the State Attorney General's office is not clear enough to determine where Garris hands were when he was shot.
Over the last month, family and community members have called on the police to be held accountable and for more transparency.
