A pet obesity epidemic is affecting dogs, and experts urge owners to feed pets appropriately and ensure they exercise.

Dogs need 30 minutes to two hours of daily exercise, with walking being the best activity.

A New Rochelle veterinarian, Dr. Paul Schwartzreich, said allergies, shown by chronic ear infections and foot licking, are a major issue. He recommends identifying whether dogs have food or environmental allergies to save money and help pets.

Schwartzreich also advises watching for disease signs like lowered appetite, unexplained weight loss, and increased thirst.

Annual vet visits can catch diseases early and provide prevention advice. He stresses monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives year-round.

Owners should consult veterinarians before giving dogs any online medicines or products.
