The Nanuet Fire Department hosted their open house on Saturday morning as part of an ongoing state-wide recruitment campaign.
The recruitment program is important for Rockland County, which is one of the few counties in the state of New York that is entirely volunteer.
"The ranks of our volunteers are dwindling. We’re doing more with less, and we need people to join,” said fire commissioner Vincent Pacella.
There are currently 35 members of the Nanuet Fire Department that respond to calls, and they say the call frequency keeps getting higher, meaning they need more members.
Despite the danger that comes with being a firefighter, members of the department say the job is a fulfilling one.
"It’s a community. Everyone here has each other’s back no matter what,” said firefighter Vito Tejada.
Benefits that come with volunteering include health insurance, scholarships, pension, life insurance and much more.
