The White Plains-Greenburgh branch of the NAACP met with District Attorney Anthony Scarpino Monday night to discuss a recent change in the county's justice system.
The focus of the meeting was Scarpino's decision to eliminate bail for most misdemeanors in the county.
"Our goal is to be very progressive in regards to our approach to criminal justice and to be fair," he says. "The job of district attorney is to seek justice."
The directive was enacted to end discrimination against impoverished defendants and to ensure equal treatment for all accused of non-violent misdemeanors.
"Its not punitive and it's not to get them to plead guilty eventually," he says. "The goal is to do what's right and do justice for everyone involved no matter what their economic status."
In addition to criminal justice, Monday night's meeting focused on civil engagement.
