A longtime homeowner on Virginia Avenue in North Bellmore says part of his backyard has been swallowed up by a hole.
Dan Butler says the pit is the result of the home next door being torn down. He says two sections of his fence have collapsed into the pit.
Butler says he has contacted the Town of Hempstead over the past year and a half, asking for something to be done about the stalled new construction as he watches the pit grow larger and take more of his yard.
The town says it has sent out inspectors multiple times and has issued multiple violations to the owner of the property.
The town says it's working with the owner of the property and a new contractor to expedite the work and get the new home's foundation done by the end of June.
Neighbors say they're just as frustrated as Butler and that they have also contracted the Town of Hempstead numerous times.
