298ds agoMount Vernon brought some of its students back into the classroom for the first time Monday morning, despite the rise of coronavirus cases.
The city’s youngest students returned to the classroom, with pre-K through third grade coming back first.
Students in grades 4-8 will head back to school as part of the phase two reopening plan on Nov. 30. Grades 9-12 will go back to school on Dec. 14.
The district promises enforced social distancing and strict adherence to CDC guidelines.
Reopening schools comes days after Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard issued a stay-at-home advisory.
"We are taking extra precautions because of our high percentage of persons of color, our high poverty rate, and our high incidents of chronic disease," she said.
Businesses, gyms, restaurants and houses of worship are all still open.
The city has recorded around 100 new COVID-19 cases in the first half of the month.
Pennington students did not return Monday because a teacher tested positive for COVID, according to the mayor.
