An incident at Woodbridge High School in Middlesex County is sparking new security measures.
Now, schools in the district are expecting metal detectors sooner than originally planned.
Initially, plans for the installation of metal detectors weren't expected until next year.
But now, after a loaded gun was found in a student's backpack, the superintendent shared the district won't be waiting.
Those metal detectors have been ordered and will be deployed immediately at all three high schools.
The incident in question happened on March 17. Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says a Woodbridge High School student received threatening text messages from another student and reported it to the school administration. After investigating, school officials located the other student, searched their belongings and found a loaded ghost gun.
The 17-year-old was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon and making terroristic threats.
The superintendent shared they are expecting the metal detectors to be delivered in the coming weeks.
He said once school plans are developed, principles will be reaching out with specific protocols.
In a letter to high school parents and guardians, the school district shared the coordinator of security, along with building administrators and security personnel will be meeting to discuss logistics. Then, a plan will be shared with the community before installation and usage.
The superintendent wrote, "student and staff safety must remain our top priority and we are willing to take whatever steps are necessary."
