Some adjunct professors at Mercy College are demanding better pay and benefits or they may try to unionize.

About 90 adjunct professors signed a petition and delivered it to the college's president. The petition states how they have to hold multiple jobs to get by and plan to have a vote to unionize.

One faculty member tells News 12 it's time the college paid better.

"At Mercy we are dedicated," says adjunct professor Anthony Aggimenti. "We are trying to help our students reach their dreams. A lot of them come from low-income diverse backgrounds, but the faculty themselves can't have any dreams because of the working conditions we have."

The president of Mercy College says administrators are not anti-union, adding that they want to raise wages.

"I've been trying to move adjunct salaries forward almost since the moment I arrived here at Mercy," says Timothy Hall, president of Mercy College.

The petition to unionize comes as Mercy College prepares to absorb students and some of the faculty from the College of New Rochelle, which is closing this summer due to financial issues.
