A public meeting was held Monday for Bronx residents to voice their opinions on bringing FreshDirect to the South Bronx.
Some residents support the online grocer establishing its new headquarters at the Harlem River Yard in Mott Haven. Supporters say the jobs are needed and that they welcome any company that wants to invest in the Bronx.
However, even before the meeting started, labor leaders, residents, health professionals and members of the group South Bronx Unite stood outside holding signs that read "no public money" for FreshDirect.
The residents who oppose the move say they are concerned about their health. They say over 1,000 trucks will be in the area every single day, and that could be detrimental to those who suffer from asthma.
Meanwhile, FreshDirect says their trucks are environmentally friendly. They say the trucks do not go through residential areas and they do not idle.
FreshDirect says they will be breaking ground very soon and should be up and running in 2016.
