The Manna Project of Long Island is hosting a food giveaway event at St. John Baptist Church in Inwood.
The
Manna Project is a food pantry that connects Nassau County residents in need with healthy and nutritious foods.
News 12’s Antoinette Biordi was at the event where volunteers supplied Thanksgiving meals to over 300 people.
Many of the families present say that inflation is forcing them to look to food pantries to be able to have meals with their families this holiday season.
Inwood resident Geneva White received food to make a nice Thanksgiving meal for herself and her niece.
“It's hard times, and everything is so expensive,” said White.
She is just one of a growing number of Long Islanders who find themselves struggling to put food on the table this Thanksgiving.
“I can't believe how high the prices are. Sometimes the things are so high, I can't get it,” said Peggy McDuffie of Farmingdale.
Yvette Hester of the Manna Project says their food pantry hopes to help people like McDuffie and White.
“Love covers a multitude of things,” she said. “Everything has increased, like gas prices and food prices. Families are having a hard time, so this is one of the main reasons why I formed this.”
The Manna Project’s food pantry is open every second Saturday of the month.
