A four-alarm fire broke out in the basement of a three-story commercial building in the heart of Tarrytown early this morning.

According to fire officials 911 calls began coming in at 4:30 a.m. about smoke coming from 27 Main St. The building houses the Tarry Tavern bar and restaurant and two apartments on the second and third floors.

Residents got out safely, but Tarrytown First Assistant Chief Patrick Derivan says the flames got into the walls and traveled from the basement to the top floor making it a stubborn fire to fight.

Firefighters from more than a dozen area departments came in to help. Approximately 75 to 100 first responders were on scene as firefighters worked frantically to keep the flames from spreading to the other buildings. They were able to contain the fire to the other building.

It took about three hours to get the fire under control as Main Street and many surrounding streets were shut down. No one was injured, no word yet on the cause.
