There were some tense moments in Ossining Thursday after a man with swords barricaded himself inside his home.
Police say they were called to 21 Park Ave. around 4 a.m. by the man's wife. She told them her husband was intoxicated and that she was concerned for his life. As they approached the home, the 49-year-old man warned police to stay back and then barricaded himself inside the attic with several swords and a knife.
After hours of tense negotiating, officers say he finally surrendered, agreeing to safely throw the weapons onto the front lawn. He was then restrained and taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital. "The mere fact that he had weapons wasn't going to take our folks off their mission. You know they stayed with it and they talked to him. And with a great deal of empathy were able to convince him that they're here really for his own good," says Ossining Police Chief Kevin Sylvester.
At this the time, police don't expect any charges to be filed against the suspect, calling it a mental health issue.
