Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Coney Island, after a 38-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a car.
The NYPD said Shot Spotter was activated at 1 Ocean Drive around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A source told News 12 that the shooting happened on the sidewalk outside of the building.
“Not surprised, bro,” said Freddie, of Coney Island. “We hear gunshots like fireworks.”
Police said they discovered the victim one block away outside of 2950 West 35th St., which is part of the O’Dwyer Gardens NYCHA complex.
Investigators said the victim, who has yet to be identified, suffered gunshot wounds to his torso and arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It’s crazy,” said Rebecca Renderos, of Coney Island. “I just came out [of my apartment building] and now I hear this [news]. It’s ridiculous.”
Crime tape surrounded a black Chevy Equinox for more than 12 hours on Tuesday, as medical gloves and broken glass from the front passenger window sat on West 35th Street.
A source on scene told News 12 that the Equinox is believed to have hit at least three parked cars.
The owner of one of those parked cars, who asked not to be identified, said she had to skip work because of the damage.
Residents said they worry whenever they walk outside.
“I’m in my house at a reasonable hour,” said Connie Jones, of Coney Island. “I don’t walk a lot in these streets at night.”
“Coney Island’s not safe as it used to be,” Renderos said.
No arrests were made as of Tuesday evening.
