Tax season is underway and that means phone scams are getting even more aggressive.
Local lawmakers are warning about imposters who say they are IRS agents. In some of the scams, unsuspecting victims are threatened with arrest, deportation or other legal action.
Rep. Nita Lowey (D) says she knows about these scams from personal experience. "It's reaching a wide cross section of our community ranging from teachers, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, parents, young adults, and even your congresswoman, because I got a call about 10 days ago."
Officials say the IRS will never ask for payment over the phone. They urge people to call the police if they feel like they are being scammed.
