Longtime Yonkers educator Fred Hernandez is entering the city's mayoral race, saying Mayor Mike Spano broke his promise to the city when it comes to education.

Hernandez was a principal who now works in the school district's central office, watching as the schools try to overcome a $26 million shortfall.

Current Mayor Mike Spano says he only found out through News 12 that he has an opponent. "I will be announcing my plans for re-election within the next couple of weeks, but I welcome him and the many others to the process," he said.

According to Hernandez, more needs to be done to invest in the people of Yonkers, especially when public servants are not meeting their needs.

The candidates are expected to discuss many issues facing the city, which include economics and education.
