A location app notified some parents that a road accident had occurred minutes after the Orange County bus rollover crash on Thursday.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said he learned about the bus crash from a grandparent who was alerted through the Life-360 app.
Experts say it's a useful tool for loved ones who travel frequently.
"It allows us to check in from many miles away. It's passive. You don't actively have to do something to let people know where you are and that you are OK. If you're not OK, it gives alert letting your emergency contact, parents, or friends know that something is wrong," says tech expert Lance Ulanoff.
The app has a crash option to alert a user's family that they've been involved in a road emergency.
