Local farmers and elected officials are raising alarms over recent budget cuts by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), warning that the changes could have serious consequences for the region’s agricultural economy.
One of the most significant cuts includes the elimination of a $1 million local food purchasing program, which previously allowed food banks to buy fresh produce directly from area farms. Farmers say the loss of this program will hurt both local growers and families who rely on food assistance.
Rep. Pat Ryan joined farmers in voicing concern over additional reductions in agricultural research funding research that supports innovation and efficiency in farming practices. Without it, many fear the future of farming in the region could be at risk.
“A healthy agriculture in the U.S. equals a nutritious and reliable food source for the people of the United States,” said Jeff Crist, owner of Crist Brothers Orchards.
The USDA has not yet responded to requests for comment.
