After losing by just 18 votes two years ago, it appears Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins has turned the tables and ousted 10-term incumbent Nick Spano (R-Yonkers). However, it looks like it is again headed for a recount.
Stewart-Cousins declared victory in the 35th Senate District race Tuesday night. With 85 percent of the precincts reporting, she has 51 percent of the vote over Spano?s 49 percent. Still, 1,100 votes separate the two. Stewart-Cousins said her victory is a victory for change and reform in Albany.
Spano, however, will not give a concession speech just yet. Spano says he is looking for a fair and accurate count and says he will wait until the Board of Elections goes through the 2,000 absentee ballots and recanvasses all the machines.
