Students are on high alert on the campus of Manhattanville College, where a large water chiller tested positive for legionella, the bacteria that causes the potentially deadly Legionnaires' disease.
The water chiller, which works with the building's heating and cooling systems, is located between Benzinger Hall and a parking lot.
An email was sent out from the college president's office, saying the water chiller was shut down completely.
"At the same time, the campus is in the middle of flu season and literally hundreds of cases with flu-like symptoms have been reported to the College Health Center in the last week and all have tested negative for legionella bacteria," the email reads. "We have no reported instances of Legionnaires' disease."
The college president's office says it plans to have the water chiller completely cleaned and disinfected on Thursday. They say it will be business as usual until then.
