Hospital workers at two area hospitals are preparing for possible layoffs.It's the second round of layoffs this year for South Shore Medical System. The company runs Mount Vernon Hospital and South Shore Medical Center.The layoffs will reportedly affect clerical staff and physicians. Officials say the cuts will focus on under-utilized programs.Company officials say the cuts are needed due to increased costs and unpaid care. According to the company, about $30 million in services were provided for patients that never paid.Sources say the affected workers will get their regular salaries until the end of the year and severance packages.Earlier this year, South Shore Medical System eliminated close to 50 jobs.
