New York lawmakers say Congress is making significant progress toward passing a renewal of the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.
The federal fund covers medical expenses for Sept. 11 first responders who suffered illnesses related to the cleanup.
Lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle say passing a bill to extend the Zadroga Act is an urgent matter since it has expired and will run out of funding early next year.
U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand joined NYPD Commissioner William Bratton at a news conference Thursday in Washington, D.C to show their support for the Zadroga measure.
House Speaker Paul Ryan says Congress will reauthorize the act in a comprehensive spending bill next week.
