As the fifth anniversary of the September 11th attacks approaches, a memorial to victims from Westchester is finally complete.
The Rising is a steel structure that sits at the base of the Kensico Dam in Valhalla. The memorial contains 109 intertwined steel beams, one for each life lost in Westchester. The circular base is made up of granite stones, revealing the names of the victims.
The crowning glory of The Rising arrived in Valhalla Thursday. It is a 40-foot mast that sits atop the structure reaching for the sky. The construction has been a two-year creative process, with pieces assembled at the Tallix Art Foundry in Beacon and then transported to Valhalla. The sculpture cost $3 million, however, most of it was raised through grants and private donations. There will be a dedication ceremony on September 10.
