The sister and brother-in-law of a Kingston man were killed after being kidnapped by Hamas in Israel on Oct. 7, according to Chabad of Ulster County.
Margit Silverman and her husband Yosi Silverman were buried in Israel on Monday, Oct. 23, according to a post on the synagogue's Facebook page.
Margit's brother, Maurice Shnaider, is sitting shiva, the Jewish period of mourning, at his home in Kingston, according to the synagogue. Synagogue officials said hundreds of people from all over the area, including complete strangers, are traveling hours to mourn with Shnaider.
"Margit Silverman Hy"d & Yosi Silverman Hy"d All those who were murdered and tortured in Israel were done so simply because they were a Jew. Let us all please show our support at this time to the Shnaider family and make every effort to reach out to them during this week of Shiva. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Maurice, his wife Cindy, and his family on their loss," the rabbi wrote on the synagogue's Facebook page.
Margit and Yosi's children, Shiri and Yarden Bibas as well as their two sons, 4-year-old Ariel and 9-month-old Kfir are still being held hostage by Hamas, according to the synagogue.
Schnaider is expected to make a short public comment on Thursday morning in front of the synagogue, according to officials.
