A judge voided the budget that was voted on by the Peekskill Common Council in an 11th-hour meeting.
Lawyer Robert Sullivan sued the Common Council, claiming the members didn't follow proper procedure when they voted on a budget Dec. 1, 2015. Although the judge ruled in Sullivan's favor, the decision means the city manager's original budget will be implemented instead. That means residents will be hit with a 5.9 percent tax increase.
Resident George Ondek is angry over the tax hike and doesn't like how the divided council went about things.
Democratic Council Member Kathie Talbot says the excessive tax increase is a real slap in the face to hardworking taxpayers.
