Some young hockey players must find another place to train now that a popular ice skating rink in Fairfield abruptly announced it's closing next week.

Parents received an email Thursday from the Fairfield Ice Academy director saying they had to close up shop right away.

The letter said in part, "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the ownership's decision to permanently close Fairfield Ice Academy effective on Monday."
The director went on to thank the families for skating with them over the years and said parents will be reimbursed for any current or upcoming summer programs.

The news is devastating to some parents and children, including Larry Bliss and his son - 8-year-old AJ.

"It's just sad, and disappointed he won't be able to play here after today," Bliss said.

As to the reason why Fairfield Ice Academy has to close so abruptly, the director deferred any comments to the property owner, Fischel Properties. News 12 reached out to them and is still waiting to hear back.

Wonderland of Ice Associates president Lisa Fedick released a statement saying:

"The Wonderland of Ice Family is deeply saddened by the abrupt closure of the Fairfield Ice Academy. The coaches and staff there did a great job of educating young skaters and hockey players, while instilling a love for our sports. This facility will be missed by all in the Connecticut skating community. We would like to welcome all of the patrons of the Ice Academy to continue their skating pursuits with us here at the Wonderland of Ice. We will make your transition to our programming seamless, without any downtime off the ice. We can offer you two full size NHL ice sheets, Ferguson's Center Ice Pro Shop, as well as a full service snack bar and truly something for everyone of all ages and abilities.

For group lessons and figure skating please contact our Skating Director, Marisa Panuczak at (203) 258-6462 or wonderlandskating@gmail.com.
