A strong chemical odor filled the air in the area of Woodwarth Avenue Wednesday morning as crews continued to investigate a chemical spill inside a warehouse that led to a massive fire.
It happened just after 12 p.m. on Tuesday at a warehouse on 143 Woodwarth Ave. The Yonkers Police Department said the fire began as a chemical reaction from beauty supplies that had spilled inside.
The city's fire department was joined by more than 80 firefighters from 17 different companies to get the situation under control. Officials say six firefighters have minor injuries after battling the fire, but no one was seriously hurt.
While firefighters battled the flames, several neighbors were told to stay indoors while others were evacuated as a precaution.
“[At] first, I thought they were shooting a movie," said Chris Angounou. "They have the studio over here, and then I saw the fumes. The fire department gave me a clue there might be something bigger.”
"I was coming home, and I saw the fire trucks," Lynn Price added. "I got concerned, so I tried to find out, and they were like, 'You can't go there.' I was like, 'But my house is there.' I came and got my dog. I was worried about him."
During that time, Metro-North's Hudson line was briefly suspended between the Yonkers and Greystone stations. Emergency crews monitored air quality around the area and on train platforms throughout the evening. They tell News 12 the wind was moving in the right direction, pushing the smoke towards the river.
Yonkers police say the investigation is ongoing. More information may be released as the fire and police departments continue to learn more.
