Officials say one of the Indian Point nuclear power plant's reactors was shut down due to an electrical disturbance.
Plant owner Entergy says the Indian Point 3 reactor was automatically shut down around 7 p.m. Monday. This is the fourth time since May that the unit has gone offline. The company says the disturbance on the non-nuclear side of the plant is related to a high voltage transmission line. There was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the public.
The Indian Point 2 reactor was shut down for three days earlier this month due to a tripped circuit breaker. The two reactors together supply about one-quarter of the power used in New York City and Westchester County.
An Entergy spokesman admits the number of shutdowns in the last several months isn't normal.
"In recent years it's run 400, 500, 600 days consecutively without any problems so these shutdowns aren't typical. We have to figure out commonality and make sure they run safely in the future," says spokesman Jerry Nappi.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will increase scrutiny of the plant.
"A thorough investigation of this shutdown is underway and we will make sure the safety of New Yorkers is not compromised," Cuomo said in a statement.
Officials tells News 12 that Unit 3 should be back up and running within the week.
