Over 100 local girls are spending their spring break learning about STEM in Stamford through SoundWaters' Science Stars.

The weeklong program focuses on experiments, exploring the Long Island Sound and working with STEM professionals.

"When we're young, we see images of people in different fields and just seeing more exposure to STEM fields and science fields can really broaden girls' ideas of what the possibilities are for them in their future,” said Katie Boback, assistant director of education and salt marsh programs at SoundWaters.

Elementary students in grades 2 through 5 are spending their time at the SoundWaters Coastal Education Center, while middle school students in grades 6 through 8 are at the Cohen SoundWaters Harbor Center.

"When students come to visit us for Science Stars, they do lots of different outdoor activities like looking for crabs on the rocky intertidal zone, going seining – which is fishing with really long nets in the water – doing counts of the animals that they find. They're also birding and studying salt marshes while they're here," said Boback.

The program has a fee, but SoundWaters says it offers scholarships to 83% of the students through donor funds.
