Greenpoint small business owners and local elected officials are reacting strongly to what Assembly Member Emily Gallagher claims is an MTA plan shared with her office that would eliminate G train weekend service across several months.

Gallagher posted on X that the MTA is allegedly preparing to shut down the G “every weekend in June and Dec, 2 weekends in Aug, and 1 in May and Sept.” She described the plan as unacceptable and warned that it would hurt both businesses and commuters.

Businesses near the Nassau Avenue G train station say they have already dealt with multiple weekends without the G or even the next closest train, the L, this year.

“We get our most foot traffic and sales during the weekends, and it's critical that we have the G train running," said Lediona Zharku, co-owner of Tired Thrift. "The summer is our best season, so those June and August weekends would really hurt.”

Residents, as well as workers at many of the popular restaurants, shops and bars, shared similar concerns over what they call a chronically absent weekend G train.

“Nobody that works the kind of job that needs to be around on the weekend lives in Greenpoint. They live very far away and they have to work on the weekends because they can't afford to live in Greenpoint,” said David, a Greenpoint resident of 30 years.

MTA sources could not confirm those planned service changes for June and December, and referred News 12 to its website for more details. The furthest out service change listed was for May of this year due to signal upgrades.
