Incumbent Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano wins Democratic primary
Incumbent Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano won Tuesday's Democratic primary, defeating challengers Karen Beltran and Ivy Reeves.
Spano won with a commanding amount of support. With less than half of the votes in, Spano had 74% of the vote.
News 12 spoke with the three candidates in the Yonkers mayoral race about what they want voters to know before the polls close.
Current mayor, Mike Spano, says he is proud of the work he has done for the city.
"There are some wonderful things happening in the city," said Spano. "People are proud to say they're from Yonkers, New York, now."
Beltran says she is running for mayor because she wants to make a difference in Yonkers.
"I want to improve the public education system, ensure that there are high-paying jobs for the residents here in Yonkers and I want to make sure that we maintain our public safety and really move Yonkers forward with a new perspective," Beltran said.
Reeves says she is running for "transparency" and "inclusion."
"A mayor to me, is like being the head of a household," Reeves said. "We have six districts here in the City of Yonkers, so if you have six children, they all have their own unique individual concerns and talents. As a mayor, you have to be sensitive to those things."
